Split (2016 Film), A Review…

Yet another thriller for this review as well, “Split” is a psychological horror thriller that came out in 2016 based on a man with a mental disorder.

The film follows the story of Kevin Wendell Crumb who suffers from a dissociative identity disorder. He identifies with 23 distinct alters after suffering from childhood issues stemming from abuse and abandonment. One of his alters, “The Beast” plans to rid the world of all those who have no suffered and are hence impute. The story that follows through as he ends up kidnapping and imprisoning 3 teenage girls forms the crux of the film.

One of my favorite parts about the film stems from the fact that despite being about 2 hours long, the film runs through, constantly giving us more and more to see and process. James McAvoy’s performance absolutely stands out as he very effortlessly shows us so many characters ranging all the way from 9-year old Hedwig to the fashionista Barry. He brings every one of the characters to life in a performance that takes your breath away. The story and the characters come together beautifully to create confusion in the beginning and gradually then understand what really is happening. Betty Buckley in the role of Karen, the psychologist is a huge plus to the cast. Ann Taylor’s character of course has an important role, and Casey Cooke portrays the role beautifully. Creepy scores by West Dylan elevate the mood and has us all gripping at the edge of the seat.

The final climax and scene are perfect final pieces to a puzzle that is exactly what you’re looking for. If you don’t miss it, that is.

So basically, for me, as long as you don’t overthink some inner meaning aspects of abuse, this movie is perfect for a thriller fan. And of course, I’m sticking to talking about the film alone here, and not deep-diving into the director’s past.

So if you’re a thriller fan, don’t miss this! I’d give it a 4.5/5!
