So the general expectations with a horror movie are usually all the creepy scenes, jump scares, and everything to scare you in the middle of the night. But then again, there are always movies that’ll be an exception and have comedy mixed in with the horror to really make the film and the story stand out.
Roohi is one such Hindi comedy horror film that came out earlier this year. Starring Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and Varun Sharma in the lead roles, the film was directed by Hardik Mehta with cinematography by Amalendu Chaudhary, editing by Huzefa Lokhandwala and music by Ketan Sodha (score) and Sachin-Jigar (songs).
There are of course both positives and negatives to the film and we’ll go into it a little bit. But even before all the spoilers, this is a movie I’d recommend you watch.
There are quite a few cringe-worthy moments as the movie builds up. The whole concept of weddings in the city where women are essentially kidnapped and forced into a marriage. And of course, this concept is extremely commercialized in the story. If it wasn’t enough that this concept was a part of the story, there’s way too much time spent establishing this as well. But of course, this concept is the whole reason all 3 of our main characters end up together for an extended time. While the plot seems to make sense once you’ve watched the film and taken a step back, watching as it plans out only tends to be a little incoherent. And the writing almost seems like a bit of a letdown.
But as I said, there are positives as well. All three of the main characters fit perfectly well and the actors do a brilliant job of complementing each other. There’s definitely comedy spread throughout the storyline and the writing that helps. There’s of course a little bit of a message wrapped in about “self-love” but maybe it could have been highlighted a little differently. Cinematography stands out in the film with so many different locales and backgrounds brought to us almost beautifully.
Overall, there’s a lot happening in the movie and not all of it has the chance to come through to viewers. I haven’t watched the Hindi film “Stree” yet, but I hear that there’s a lot of overlap between the two films in terms of performance and more.
I’d give the movie a 3.5/5 and I’d recommend watching it at some point of time when you need to just laugh out loud a bit!
