When was the last time you thought about the dream you picked for yourself?
In the last couple of months, I’ve had a lot of time to think about what I want for my future? What are my dreams? What are my next steps? What should I really be focusing on?
It’s a hard conversation to have in general with yourself. Not all of us always know what we really want to do. But there’s no doubt that at every stage in life, we must identify a dream for ourselves. It could be something as simple as writing one blog post, or as difficult as getting into a top university. And of course, as we go from one person to another, the difficulty of the dream differs as well. For instance, the dream of dancing could be easily achievable for one person and be insanely difficult for someone else.
So if it’s that varied, are there any wrong or bad dreams?
I believe that at the end of the day, any dream you have for progression in life, personal or professional, it’s a good dream. It’s a great first step and at the end of the day, it can only help you grow. This of course doesn’t include anything that could personally affect someone else.
But along with that, it’s important to remember the factor of settling!
It’s easy enough for me to dream about a happy life with a good career. But what’s the challenge in that? If I stay the same as I am today, I am probably going to get there with not too much additional effort. And I’ll have never known what could have been!
In life, at every step, we need to keep challenging ourselves. After all, what got us “here”, is not going to get us “there”. I was recently on Pinterest when I came upon this quote “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re too small!”. It’s a simple statement really and most of us have probably heard different versions at different points in life. But that day for me, it somehow struck a nerve. I truly believe that where we dream of being in our life, that’s where we get, give or take a few steps.
But if that is the case, isn’t it important for us to dream big?
If say, I dream of becoming a CEO one day, I am going to put in the efforts that are required to get there. And when I’ve put all those efforts in, I know that even if I don’t become the CEO, I could become the president, or vice president, or whatever equivalent position there is.
And dreaming of becoming CEO of an international conglomerate one day, that’s a dream that scares me a little bit. And for a lot of different reasons. But I know I can tackle those with a little effort!
So there you go, that’s my quote for the day! Life’s hard, and we can’t do much about that really, but the least we can do is dream big to achieve big!
