So I am fresh out of watching this film and I am a fan, so, fair warning, I might be a teeny bit biased.
Drishyam as a film was a great film as such. The 2013 film had everything you’d expect out of it and more. A fan of crime thriller and all, there was o doubt that I liked the authentic take on a simple story.
Sequels to good films have often been known to be disappointers. So when I learned about Drishyam 2, I didn’t have too much hope for it. If you’re wondering whether I was right or wrong, I am somewhere in between at the moment.
I finally got around to watching the film yesterday, but less than 30 minutes in, I was a little bored and distracted and I ended up pausing it to watch later. When I ended up with a lot of time in hand today, I finally unpaused and began the watch, and I’m glad I did.
Before I get into the details, Drishyam 2: The Resumption is a Malayalam-language drama-thriller starring Mohanlal, Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, Asha Sarath, Murali Gopy, and several others in what forms a very talented cast. Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the film has cinematography by Satheesh Kurup, editing by V.S. Vinayak, and music by Anil Johnson.
The film takes off about 6 years after the events of the original. Georgekutty, who had previously outsmarted the police on the murder of Varun Prabhakar now owns a movie theatre and is working on a script for his very own film. I’m not going to go into the story too much, but essentially the investigation is ongoing, people are jealous and, new events come to light.
Where the film didn’t do too well is the first half. In what can only be a very slow run of events, the first half is pretty much the director setting the scene for the second half and establishing characters and situations. There’s also the subtle unraveling of the story in this time, but it’s so subtle that you’ll miss it until the very end. The story no longer focuses on the protagonist’s love for movies concerning the crime, but rather only highlights it in his personal and professional life. There is of course the usual cat-and-mouse chase as expected, but I wonder if it needed to be for three-fourths of the film.
Where things really turn around is in that last quarter. From when that cat-and-mouse game comes to a close, the screenplay picks up and the pace quickens. It now becomes the film that all of us were expecting and looking forward to. Nail-biting scenes full of unexpected turns and a storyline to kill for in a package you can’t miss.
There’s no doubt that the entire cast compliments the story and portrays a perfect scene throughout.
Cinematography is brilliant in the picturesque villages of Kerala that are perfectly brought to us with good editing as well.
overall, if you manage to get through the first half of the film, you won’t want to get up until the very end.
I clearly loved the film and I’m sure you will too if you like crime thrillers and down-to-earth screenplays. I’d give it a 4.5/5 with my eyes closed! And of course, it’s on Amazon Prime right now, so don’t miss it! (And for those of you, like me, who don’t have the best handle on Malayalam, it’s got subtitles!)
