Anyone’s who’s been following my blog for a bit will already know that I’m a fan of anything Fantasy or Magic. So of course, as soon as I got wind of the new TV series on Netflix, I binged on “Cursed!
Before I get to the main items, here’s a tidbit from my end. When I began to watch this TV series, the first episode definitely did not catch my attention. the hour-long episode had me taking at least 4-5 breaks, considering dropping the show and more. I’m not sure exactly why I kept going. Maybe it was a hope for the upcoming scenes/episodes, maybe it was the promise of magic or maybe, it was just a little quarantine boredom. Either ways, I kept watching and having completed the series now, I don’t regret it 100%.
Alright, coming back to the main matter of discussion now, Cursed is an American fantasy drama now on Netflix which is at the end of the day, a reimagined version of the Arthurian Legends featuring most of our beloved characters. Starring Kathrine Langford, Devon Terrell, Gustaf Skarsgard, Daniel Sharman, Sebastian Armesto, Lily Newmark, Peter Mullan, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Bella Dayne, Matt Stokoe, and several more talented stars, this is a TV series you can definitely check out if you’re a fan of fantasy!
The 10-episode season 1 is a nice put story with several open ends to be picked up in a second season with fairly good acting from the talent. It was definitely fun to see that brand new twist to each character in the legend in very different ways. I suppose the only thing I might have missed could ideally be the name of the all-powerful sword (Excalibur referred to as the ‘Sword of Power’ here).
The speed of the show, however, is admittedly a little confusing. Some scenes go on forever, and then scenes that are not in enough detail. While it’s definitely clear that there’s a lot of stories left to cover, it’s not clear if this is another young adult fantasy show or a much more intense (Game of Thrones like) R rated show. Katherine Langford ultimately carries the show on her shoulder.
What I did miss, was the actual magic, a little bit more information/detail, maybe some mentoring to our dear protagonist and a lot more on Merlin, Arthur, and Lancelot!
Overall, this is not a season that you’ll come out from feeling like it is the ‘Best-Show-Ever’ but it’s also a show that’ll keep you pleasantly occupied for the 10 odd hours. For me, personally, what kept my attention through it all was the new take on a story that has always kept my heart (Arthurian Legends), which coincidentally is also the first reason I watched “Merlin”!
If you’re a fan of fantasy like me, I’d definitely recommend this one as well. I’d rate it a 3.75/5!
