A biography, ‘Hidden Figures’ is one of the more realistic and down-to-earth films that have come out in recent times. A period film set in 1961, it looks at the difficulties that black women faced in that period and their slow rise in the society.
The film follows the story of 3 black female mathematicians working for NASA during the race to launch the next rocket was underway in America, after the successful launch of Yuri Gagarin by the Soviet.
Right, it’s easy enough to read the storyline from Wikipedia, so not going into that, the film looks at an intricate view of the difficulties that black women faced in America. With segregated divisions and colored bathroom and no black women in top positions and yet, aspiring intelligent women who are often passed upon simply because of their coloring, irrespective of their talent!
An extremely compelling watch, the film gets you easily invested in the lives of the 3 women and they struggle with the racist oppression and yet, never back down, standing up for themselves and the talent they know they possess.
For the outstanding output, the film got nominated for 3 Oscars and won 2 Golden Globe Awards and was even named one of the top 10 films of 2016!
An inspiring story, the film is based on its namesake novel by Margot Lee Shetterly, directed by Theodore Melfi. Splendid cinematography by Mandy Walker and of course, outstanding acting by Taraji P.Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae. It is definitely not surprising that the film received raving reviews from audience and critics alike!
The movie is a definite must-see! I’d give it 4.25/5.
